Phi Mu
There are many stereotypes regarding sororities and fraternities. Many think the only people that join them are stuck-up rich kids associated with constant drinking, partying and slacking off. I used to believe those stereotypes until I decided to go through sorority recruitment this past fall at Florida State. My mom had always talked about her sorority that she attended at FSU and how many people she met and is still close with to this day. Coming into a brand new school, hardly knowing anyone, I decided I needed to branch out and find my own close group to belong to. I was so nervous that first week. I didn’t know what to expect. I only had the encouragement of my mother to guide me through it. As it turns out I ended up finding a home within Phi Mu, the same sorority my mom had once been to at this same school. This community of girls defeats all stereotypes about sororities. Not only does Phi Mu Sorority give girls a chance to meet new people and form new friendships, it is actively involved in various community service projects and philanthropies. The girls run it themselves in a mature, intriguing way, and I have truly found my niche here a FSU within the Phi Mu house. I haven’t met one girl in this group of 150 who isn’t a beautiful and trustworthy person inside and out. It sounds very cliché but some of the girls I have come to know I will remain friends with for life. This community I now belong to reflects the intelligence, spirit, dedication, commitment, and beauty that can be found at this campus. Of course there many other sororities on campus that mirror these qualities equally, however it is Phi Mu that I personally feel is my community to belong to.
